Lent 1 Sunday February 22nd ‘Journey through Lent’

Matthew 4:1-11 ‘Jesus in the wilderness

Life is hectic for many; it can feel as if there are not enough hours in the day. It is no surprise then that Faiths like Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism encourage us to take ‘time out’ to think about our lives, faith and one another. To get off the wheel and stop and stare.

For Christians we are reminded that Jesus spent 40 days and nights in the wilderness prior to his ministry in the world and it was a time of hardship including temptations.

This time is observed in the church as Lent, to help us see how things really are, in the hope, that when Easter arrives, we will be free of the wilderness and renewed, made new or at least on the way to being.

A core role and privilege as a Chaplain to the Seafarers is to listen to their stories of being in the wilderness, to hear the truth of their lives, onboard, relationships with family and help further in whatever way we can, with God’s help  their own renewal, being made new.
