The 40 days of lent provide time, permission to take up spiritual disciplines like praying, reading scripture, giving up certain luxuries, appreciating nature, to help us draw closer to God.

It is no accident that the story of the woman at the Well follows immediately after the story of Nicodemus.

Nicodemus was a powerful man, a Pharisee, a leader who people listened to, who visited Jesus under the cover of darkness. The ‘woman’ at the Well  had no name, was a Samaritan despised by some, a religious and political outsider, who met Jesus at noon in broad daylight.

The story of the woman at the Well shows us that being sent to serve means to people of all faiths or none, whose name we might not know, strangers in a foreign land who may need help and support.

This is the work of the Mission to Seafarers to show compassion ‘come alongside’ seafarers, to provide centres that are a ‘home away from home’ a place to relax and connect with loved ones and one another and Chaplains and volunteers who visits ships and listen, engage with the crew and respond as needed.
