Except for a few, work isn’t often described as a recipe for fun and relaxation. There are days off and vacation for that. Nothing not even well-oiled machinery can continue indefinitely there needs to be away time.

Seafarers work 4 or 6 hours shifts at a time twice a day with the need for extra hours on occasions such as cleaning the cargo holds. Whether working or eating or sleeping or going ashore the ship is their life for up to 10 months.

Jesus knew he needed to step away from the demands of the crowds and his work to go to a quiet place  to pray, visit a friend, eat breakfast by the lake shore. He wants the same for us, that we have the opportunity to get away and refresh.

The work of the Mission to Seafarers is to assist seafarers to get away from the life onboard ship and reconnect with their families, themselves, nature and God so they are better able to cope with the daily demands of their work. To feel as we all need to, valued, heard and cared for.

Where and how do you 'get away'?
